Day 12 –
Lexi and I had a nice morning walk today, but it was already getting hot quickly so we came home after only a mile. Phoenix summers are really hard for outdoor exercise of any kind. I know Lexi was hot and tired because the minute we walked into the nice air-conditioned house she plopped down on the tile floor and spread out, just enjoying the feel of the cool stone.
My new challenge today was eating out. I had made plans with my amazing friend Susan. I have know her for more than 30 years and although she lives on the other side of town, we always manage to find time to see each other every few months to get together for some girl time and catch up on life. Usually this involves a meal. We made plans to meet for lunch and the restaurant had a great salad bar so I was all set. I just had to avoid any croutons or crackers and skip the carrots and I had a nice low carb lunch. After finishing our salads, Susan had some of the self-serve ice cream. She was sweet and asked me, “You don’t mind do you? Will this be hard if I have this?” but honestly it wasn’t hard. I had grabbed some walnuts to much on and it was fine.
I am not sure that I have some great reserve of will power, but I know that I am working towards my goal. I want to be thinner and healthier so I can comfortably travel to all the great places I hope to visit and I want to have the energy to enjoy playing with my amazing beautiful grandchild. Making healthy choices about my food will get me closer to those goals.
Susan and I talked about the diet and I shared how we were doing. We both commiserated on how much harder it is to lose weight once you are in menopause, so she was interested in how I was doing on the Keto diet. I feel like we're doing great staying on track, but Peter and I are not letting this diet take over our lives, we are just trying hard to be more aware of food choices. I have been reading food labels as I shop, looking at the number of carbs. I have checked the amount of carbs online when I am not sure, so we can make good decisions and still stay within our goals.
I know some people are extremely serious about their Keto diets; carefully counting every single carb and something called macros. According to Google, “The term “macros” is short for MACRONUTRIENTS in the context of nutrition and the Keto diet. Macronutrients are the energy-giving components of food that fuels our body. They include carbohydrates, protein, and fat; this is where your dietary calories come from.” Basically some people carefully count the percentages of fats, proteins and carbs for everything they eat. Peter and I are looking at foods and trying to make good choices, but we certainly aren’t going around with a calculator checking on what percentage of protein vs. fat is in each item we eat. If we tried to do that this diet would already have been over for both of us. We just aren’t that kind of people. We are both just giving a lot more thought to what we eat. Peter explained that having limited choices is helping him to eat less and I would agree, plus I do think I had a carb heavy diet before so this is a big change for my body.
We did have an oops moment at dinner. I asked what vegetable he wanted, and Peter said he wanted lima beans with his meal. He made himself a steak and I had a piece of salmon and I prepared the lima beans. After serving both of us, I started thinking about lima beans so I looked up the total carbs and whoops, there are 39 carbs in a cup. We hadn’t eaten too many, so we both felt like we had half a cup or less. I knew that corn and potatoes were high in carbs, but all types of beans and legumes are also really high in carbs. Oh well, we won’t make that mistake again and I think we both were able to still stay under our daily goal of less than 25 total carbs.
